A lot of travellers are looking for ways to make money while abroad.
While the average cost of travel across the globe can be as high as $3,000 per person per year, there are many travellers who can make a significant financial gain from taking advantage of the many lucrative opportunities that are available.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is calling on travellers to be aware of all of the options available to them and to take advantage of them.
“When we think of the cost of a trip, there’s a lot of things we can do to reduce our costs, but what we really want to do is to make sure we’re maximizing our profits and our income,” said CTF’s executive director, Catherine Condon.
The CTF estimates that the average Canadian family can save up to $30,000 a year by travelling.
While that’s a significant savings, it comes with some challenges.
“The average Canadian can’t buy an item at the mall that they need or a car that they want.
So there’s all kinds of ways to save,” said Condon, noting that many people are using the Internet to search for items to save money.
In addition to searching online, many people also use coupons to shop, which can also be a good option to do business with.
Condon says some travellers may even find that they can find cheaper prices at hotels, but the CTF also recommends booking a trip online for those who need to be able to travel for longer.
“If you can save money, then you can go for a more affordable travel option and it’s definitely a win-win situation,” she said.
For travellers who do need to travel, Condon recommends looking at how long it will take to get to your destination.
“You need to know how long you need to go for, how long is it going to take you to get there, how much you’re going to pay, how many hotel rooms you’re willing to pay and how much it will cost you,” she added.
“So that’s going to tell you what to expect and where you’re at.”
Travelers should also take note of what’s available for booking when they get to their destination.
If you’re looking for cheap travel, CTF recommends booking at least 30 days before your trip.
“That’s when you should actually check into your hotel,” she explained.
“It’s usually around the middle of that time.
If it’s a bit late, then maybe you can book it in advance.
You can find cheap hotel deals online.
And if you’re just trying to make a little extra money, you can take advantage and book a room in a luxury hotel,” said Caused by travel, or other factors?
The average Canadian travels for about 10 days a year, but if you can’t get a hotel room that day, you may have to wait until next week to book a ticket.
“For some people, that might be a bit too late,” said CAused by Travel’s Caused By Travel spokeswoman, Kate McCarley.
“Some travellers can book a hotel stay for two weeks and then they can come back the following week,” she noted.
“They may also get the same booking in the morning.”
That means some people may have booked a hotel for one night, then the next night’s accommodation is unavailable.
That means if they want to travel in January and are not able to make it to the airport, they can try to book their accommodation in February and see if they can get a better deal.
“Sometimes there’s just no hotels that will allow you to stay that long in the city.
So, you might have to travel a couple of weeks in February to get a decent hotel that you can use,” said McCarleys.
If that happens, CAused By Traveller recommends booking your hotel in advance, so you don’t have to deal with cancellations.
“There’s no reason to cancel a hotel booking when you’re in transit.
If a hotel is booked at the last minute, you should book it when you can,” said Shelly MacMillan, a travel writer from Edmonton, Alberta.
“Even if you do have to cancel your hotel reservation, it doesn’t mean you’re out of luck.
You’ll still have the option to book it if you get stranded.”
